Okay grandma and grandpa, if you don’t know what Facebook is all about – you should. Why you ask? Well, because… in my opinion, FaceBook is one of the easiest ways online – to connect, and stay connected to family and friends. In my last post, I promised you that we would share some easy ways for you to connect with your grandchildren, online.
Facebook is my personal, first choice.
Now some LDS GrandParents may be thinking about the negative things that they might have heard about Facebook. However, I am here to assure you that Facebook for grandparents, IS really a “very good thing”- IF you know how to use it correctly!
In a nutshell, Facebook is an online page about YOU, called a PROFILE, where you can share with others – what is going on in YOUR life. Once you become a member of Facebook, you can then decide WHO you want to “connect” with, and share your information with. As you allow others to become your “friends” and SEE what you are doing – you then, are able to view their “profiles”, and SEE what they doing. This is how you are able to connect with others through Facebook. It gets even better…
Of course, the LDS GrandParent is going to use Facebook to directly connect with their grandchildren, and/or with their parents; your children. If your grandchildren are still too young to have their own personal account on Facebook, you can connect with them – through their parent’s profile. Most teens today, have a Facebook account of their own.
Here is a screen shot of my PROFILE on Facebook. Go ahead, CLICK on the picture to enlarge it…
One important thing for you to know about Facebook – is that YOU are in complete control over everything on your Facebookprofile, and who sees it. In fact, unless others decide to allow you to be their “friend” – you will not be able to see their profiles.
Lets take this one step at a time, and keep it really simple.
First of all, WHY should a grandparent join Facebook? Like I said, Facebook is a great way for grandparents to connect with their grandchildren, and share what is happening in your lives – through a very simple interface. Oh, and in case I forget to tell you this, Facebook is FUN!
Joining Facebook is simple:
1. Go to http://www.facebook.com
2. Fill out the simple information that is requested. Don’t worry about filling in anything that is not absolutely mandatory. You are going to use your full name, email address, and create a password for logging in.
3. Remember, Facebook is SAFE, SECURE and SIMPLE To LEARN.
How To Register and Join Facebook?

That’s it for now. My goal, is to help grandparents take the first step, and join Facebook. So my challenge for YOU, is that today – you go through the very simple process of signing up!
Sign-up here: Facebook
In my next post – we will take a small tour of Facebook, and briefly show you how to set-up your own personal PROFILE.
I promise you, that as a grandparent, you will come to thoroughly enjoy the many cool ways that you are able to connect with your family, grandchildren, and even a few friends – through your membership on Facebook!
I haven’t even begun to tell you about all the fun ways that you are going to be enabled to connect with your grandchildren on Facebook. I can hardly wait!
Now, don’t forget to come back and tell me how it goes…

Kathryn, you are so savvy being a grandparent on Facebook! I have been trying to get my parents logged in! They are great on email, but they need to take it to the next level. Thanks for another great post!

Thanks. Hopefully, through these very simple step-by-step instructions on how to join facebook- we can get more grandparents to join Facebook; and find out what they have been missing.
If you can get your mom and dad to do email, then YES – challenge them to take this next step and join facebook. It really is my best recommendation for grandparents to connect online, with their grandchildren.

Can I tell you why I love Facebook as a grandparent? It is a place to brag about my grandchildren, share their pictures, and demonstrate how grateful I am to have them in my family.
It’s a great way to teach them the things that are important to me – in small bites – kid size bites. By sharing what I’m doing, right now, they can see what I think is important enough to share; silly enough or sentimental enough to share.
What I share on Facebook is PG – for my friends, my co-workers, and my grandchildren. It’s guaranteed – because I am in control of the content. What I share on Facebook is the Face I want the world to recognize of me.

You let the cat out of the bag! LOL Yes, I completely agree with you on everything you have said about FaceBook! It really is a wonderful way for grandparents to connect online, with their grandchildren and family, etc… in a well controlled environment.
Thank you for giving such an enthusiastic recommendation to grandparents about Facebook.

I’m a Grandma on Facebook and I’m so proud of my Dad, who is 87 and is on Facebook! He loves it and the family loves connecting wth him there. He even started writing his own blog in November. So if anyone else can get “Great-Grandpa” on Facebook, tell them they won’t be alone.

How wonderful, and what an inspiration both you, and the “Great-Grandpa” are – to all the rest of the grandparents out there; who might feel somewhat intimidated to join Facebook!
I think that one of the most important parts of learning new technology, especially for grandparents, is to be patient and know that with a little bit of time and effort – they can do it.
Thank you, for such a vote of confidence for all grandparents!

I think it’s wonderful for Grandparents to connect on Facebook — with their families, children, and any grandchildren that are there. My grandkids are too young still (oldest is 7), but my children are on Facebook, as well as their spouses. Of course I am “friends” with them all on Facebook. I have also found and become friends with several other grands on FB, including Becky and her father! Thanks for the great tutorial.

Grandpa Shayne -
Like yourself, my grandchildren are young, and so I utilize their parent’s Facebook profiles to send communications to them.
However, I have recently convinced my own mother, my children’s grandmother to join Facebook. It is so enjoyable to see how she is now able to keep up with their busy lives, as well as her great-grandchildren… my grandchildren.
As I stated, it is my opinion that Facebook is the absolute best way online, to stay connected to our families.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I’m not on Facebook but I think that I’m the only one in my family who isn’t! My children, siblings, neices, nephews and grandson are all on there and use it to keep up with each other. I think this mom/grandma/aunt/sister needs to get with the times.
Thanks for taking some of the mystery out of joining and pointing out the best reasons for it.

LDSNana, you’re the best! What a great post and encouragement for other grandparents to join in. I read about this post on LDS Media Talk.

Thank you Heather
How exciting to be featured on LDS Media Talk! I love being an LDS GrandParent, and I love using Facebook to connect with my children, grandchildren, family and friends. It is a wonderful tool, and so easy for especially “grandparents” to learn to how to use it. I look forward to making other tutorials for helping grandparents on Facebook.

My grown daughters are absolutely amazed that their Mom is on Facebook! It’s a wonderful venue for promoting ecommerce businesses, as well as providing on opportunity to join many wonderful groups with like-minded individuals who share similar interests. As a Baby Boomer I consider Facebook to be a source of continuing education.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with so many!

I think my children as well, had to also accept that “mom” was on Facebook, too. Many seem to think that Facebook is only for the younger generation. Nothing could be further from the truth. As you brought out, Facebook is also a very professional venue for promoting business and making contacts. That’s pretty big grown-up stuff I would say!
I also love that you consider Facebook “continuing education”. So do I. Facebook is in my opinion, the best online avenue for grandparents and boomers to keep up with technology, and stay connected to those they care about.
